It is not uncommon to release over a dozen sailfish in a single day or even multiple marlin when the bite is hot. Dinner is never far away either while fishing the deep water offshore of Costa Rica's southern coasts as dorado and tuna call these waters home and make a great Costa Rican dinner.
Offshore the action can be hot with certain months producing large dorado by the dozens. The rainy season washes trees and other rubble down the rivers and out into the ocean creating currents filled with floating debris which attracts the baitfish that the dorado feed on.
Another phenomenon is the annual runs of yellowfin and big eye tuna. Lucky anglers catch tuna over 300 pounds every season off the coasts of southern Costa Rica.
Wahoo are another favorite table fish aside from being one of the most ferocious hunters in the ocean. These fish swim at speeds that approach 70 MPH and will scream the drag off of a reel like nothing else in their class. Another seasonal fish, the wahoo should definitely be in your sights if you fish the rainy months in Costa Rica.
The sailfish are the predominant billfish in the area, but blue and black marlin roam these waters year round.
